Legacy Radio Access Network (RAN) infrastructure provides coverage and capacity with a fixed allocation of baseband and radio resources. This static allocation of resources means that systematic over-provisioning is needed in order to meet peak demand.
In addition, with the advent of 5G, and the introduction of smart cities, Internet of Things (IoT), connected infrastructures, and advanced virtual and augmented reality media, current static and hardware-dependence RAN networks are simply inadequate. A 5G ready network infrastructure requires an end-to-end transformation – from the fronthaul to the core to the cloud.
Dali utilizes the patented SDN Radio Router™ technology to virtualize the fronthaul network. This enables operator’s most valuable asset – RF spectrum, to be routed intelligently and dynamically based on the network load. Logical networks are created on top of a common shared physical infrastructure, enabling any incoming data streams of one or more base stations, or virtual baseband units (vBBU) to be routed to any connected remote radio units in the fronthaul network. The ability to manage base station functions centrally through software makes network resource management quicker and easier. This eliminates the need for over-provisioning to meet peak demands, enables demand dynamic allocation, and supports the partitioning of resources among different users and applications.
